  1. JOHNSON & JOHNSON took its pain reliever off the
  2. market when faced with a product tampering scare.
  3. The decision to remove Tylenol was temporarily
  4. costly in dollars but the strong market leadership
  5. was reinforced.  One of its senior executives when
  6. asked about the recall responded:
  7.     "We never really though we had much of a choice.
  8.      Our code of conduct was such a way of life in
  9.      the firm that our employees, including me, would
  10.      have been scandalized had we taken another course.
  11.      We never seriously considered avoiding the costly
  12.      recall."

  14. Sir Adrian CADBURY'S grandfather resolved an ethical
  15. conflict.  He was deeply and publicly opposed to the
  16. Anglo-Boer War.  The Queen ordered his chocolate company
  17. to send a "decorative tin with a bar of chocolate to all
  18. soldiers serving in South Africa". Recognizing the need
  19. to provide employment for his workers as well as the
  20. morale impact on the soldiers, he produced the chocolate
  21. at cost.   He did not personally profit from a situation
  22. that he considered to be unethical.

  24. A Seattle-based engineering consultancy,Parametrix Inc.
  25. had to pay $350,000 after the SPA caught it with
  26. bootleg software. The SPA is a trade group of 792 soft-
  27. ware companies that has policed the used of pirated
  28. software since 1988. The software industry loses about
  29. $4 billion per year through software piracy. The SPA
  30. files lawsuits at the rate of 2 per week. Companies are
  31. taking a firm stand against employees who pirate, and
  32. most MIS departments are on the side of SPA!

  34. The Irvine Unified School District (Irvine,California)
  35. announced in early 1992 that it will teach at all
  36. grade levels a core set of values,"based in the belief
  37. that there are values and qualitites of character to
  38. which people in all sucessful civilizations subscribe."
  39. The list of values to be taught includes:
  40.       honestry,responsibility,compassions,perseverance,
  41.       respectfulness,cooperation,courage,and 
  42.       citizenship.
